Welcoming September
September in the Rain: The Songs of Harry Warren was the title of yesterday's jazz offering by The Mike Greensill Trio at Old First Church in the Old First Concerts series. Greensill apparently takes "truth in advertising" very seriously. Almost the first thing he did was establish that the program would not consist exclusively of Warren songs. Indeed, the only other "September song" was, as one might guess, "September Song," which Kurt Weill wrote to lyrics by Maxwell Anderson. Given the eccentricities this city has been enduring, one might also have...

How's your site doing on the internet?
You have questions? These sites provide the answers. If you host your own website and wonder how it's doing compared to other sites on the web, these tools will help you measure your relevance in terms of rankings. Perhaps the most important metric to watch for is Google page rank. It is a number Google use to indicate your relevance in placing your site in searches. The exact algorithm used to determine the rank is a tightly held secret but generally, relevant quality content, good site speed, and quality incoming links will get you a higher ranking. Don't bother with keyword...

Giants beat Dodgers, gain more ground on Padres
WITH FRANK AND Jamie McCourt amidst a nasty, public divorce trial calling into question the rightful legal owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, it appears their may be a third party with some serious vested interest in the club. Less than 24 hours after his game-winning two-run blast of Jonathan Broxton, Juan Uribe laid claim again, belting another two-run shot Sunday as the Giants beat L.A. 3-0 to pull to within one game of the West-leading Padres. As a Giant Uribe now has six home runs and 16 RBIs when seeing Dodger Blue. Three of those long balls have come in the seventh inning or later,...

Transcript of Matt Gonzalez's speech at pro-liberty, anti-DC rally.
On September 4th at the San Francisco Civic Center the Campaign for Liberty hosted a "Principles over Politics" rally with the slogan, "Ending Washington's War on Us." The event featured speakers Ron Paul and John Dennis as well as Matt Gonzalez, who was the first Green Party candidate elected to public office in San Francisco, and Ralph Nader's 2008 vice presidential running mate. The event was primarily an anti-war rally, which this trio insists is a bipartisan cause. They also brought the message that those in Washington, regardless of party affiliation, have...

Green Day plays homecoming concert to sold out Shoreline Amphitheatre, glad to be home
Sorry SoCal, Green Day likes the Bay Area WAY more than they like you. That’s right, Billie Joe said it. Not like it’s any surprise, the band got their start in the East Bay so he didn't say it just to appease. Green Day still calls the Bay Area their home, and as Billie Joe said it, they haven’t become one of those “assholes” who’s moved to that "shit hole, Hollywood.” Mike Dirnt, Billie Joe Armstrong and Tré Cool have been pretty busy in the last year as they watched their musical “American Idiot” come to fruition on...

Part 3: San Francisco Health Commission set to rule on CPMC hospital's dialysis outsourcing plan
“These benchmarks are typical comparative data points found in the medical literature, such as anemia and albumin levels, etc.  However, this type of data say nothing about the quality of care provided by a particular dialysis facility; rather, these data are indicators of how good of a physician a patient has,” says Martha Dominguez Glumaz, a leading dialysis patient advocate and veteran of 30 years of dialysis treatments herself. DaVita’s reported mortality rate for dialysis patients has been called into question. DaVita doesn’t accept critically ill patients,...

Part 2: San Francisco Health Commission set to rule on CPMC hospital's dialysis outsourcing plan
For her part, Commissioner Sako raised numerous questions on August 17, including concerns that the lease with DaVita may not prevent it reducing or changing its services. She’s concerned a private company may have no requirement for it to have a Prop. Q hearing if it decides to change the level of services in the future. Sako asked for a description of the current San Francisco dialysis population and the current capacity of outpatient dialysis services in San Francisco, and asked for information on how often dialysis patients have “code” situations while receiving...

Part 1: San Francisco Health Commission set to rule on CPMC hospital's dialysis outsourcing plan
San Francisco’s Health Commission is set to rule on CPMC hospital’s dialysis outsourcing plan at its meeting on Tuesday, September 7. As I previously reported, CPMC’s dialysis patients remain very concerned about outsourcing of life itself. The Health Commission’s September 7 meeting is being held off site, at the Lady Shaw Senior Center at 1483 Mason Street, at 4:00 p.m. — not at its usual 101 Grove Street location. The Commissioner’s will be voting on whether to issue a Prop Q finding that outsourcing CPMC’s dialysis services to a for-profit...

Can CDs, crayons, DVDs, eyeglasses, pull tabs, and shoes be recycled?
As an environmentally-conscious society, most Americans know that beverage containers, cardboard, and motor oil can and should be recycled.  But there are other items that fill spaces in closets, under beds, in junk drawers, and garage corners that are not so readily recycled, yet they aren't easily thrown into the garbage can either.  Where and how can those odd or unusual items be recycled?  (In case a reminder is needed, foam packing peanuts, corks, metal keys, and baby equipment CAN be recycled.)  Here then is a list of more unusual items and where to send them...

Labor Day
Welcome to another one of those holidays that almost everyone has forgotten the significance of! It may once have been intended to be an opportunity for inspiration and reflection, but it's been made over into the usual excuse to take a day off and party. Really, the calendar would work just as well, wouldn’t it, with less moralistic nagging? What if we got rid of all those hauntingly meaningless, annoying labels and replaced them with more appropriate names like, “Summer Party”, “Spring Break”, “Winter Party with Presents”, and “End of...

Three day weekend activities: people watching at Fisherman's Wharf
Hang around Fisherman’s Wharf long enough and a visitor might find some real interesting people. San Francisco’s Fishermans’s Wharf is not only very unique due to the variety of entertainment but the people who frequent the area. The wharf offers a great opportunity to watch people and how they react to different situations. Small children seeing their very first live crab or lobster and the expression on their face when they sample the various seafood delicacies for the first time. Watching as people sit down in a restaurant or choose to pick up something at a vendor and...

Taliban announces attacks to be launched on the United States
In the second major attack this week, a suicide bomber killed at least 54 people during a rally in the city of Quetta on Friday. Pakistan’s Taliban has claimed responsibility for this latest bombing, claiming that it would launch attacks in the United States and Europe “very soon.” Counterterrorism authorities in Washington are taking this threat seriously. The Taliban claim that they are targeting Western nations, including the United States, in response to drone attacks that have been launched against their leadership in Pakistan. The White House condemned the attacks...

Three day weekend activities: San Francisco mural walkabout
San Francisco is renowned for Fisherman’s Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge however no trip to San Francisco should be complete until you visit some of the more famous murals in the Mission District. A good place to launch your walking tour is 24th Street and Mission. If you are unfamiliar with the area, you might want to pick up a mural map at Precita Eyes. Just before the store is an alley with some really unique and cool murals. Some of the murals are done just because they are fun to look at while others tell a story. Murals aren’t graffiti but true works of art...

Safeguard your marriage - invest in divorce insurance today
Ten years ago, when I was first starting to work with divorcing people, I had an idea that I thought would make divorce just a little bit less devastating - at least on a couple's bank account. The idea was part of my "divorce preparedness plan" and it was to have what I called, "marital insurance." Being a therapist, I couldn't exactly implement this idea but it has always bothered me that divorcing couples often have to come up with outrageous sums of money that they rarely have as a liquid asset in order to dissolve their marriage and end this legal contract....

Solano County considers closing Claybank jail
Solano County could close its secondary jail in an effort to find nearly $19 million in budget savings over the next three years, Sheriff-Coroner Gary Stanton said last week at the first of three budget workshops hosted by the Board of Supervisors. "We are not required to have two jails," Stanton told the board, according to The Reporter newspaper in Vacaville. "We are required to have a booking facility, and we have that (at the main county jail) in Fairfield." But closing the Claybank detention facility on Clay Bank Road, also in Fairfield, would mean more overcrowding...

9/4 @ Thee Parkside: Indie Time Machine
Thee Parkside is quickly becoming one of my favorite places to check out a show with an unfamiliar lineup (and not just because I feel a little dirty paying any more than $4 for a Sierra Nevada). Last night's show was like a throwback to mid-nineties indie rock, and I mean that, at least this once, as a compliment. Dead Feet started the night off with noisy rock that felt a bit old-fashioned (i.e. further back than the 90's) but in a good way, like a grittier version of The Witches. If I have one complaint, and it's a minor one, it's that there seemed to be a lack of...

San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf is well known for its seafood along with all of the various activities that can be enjoyed by the whole family. If you are looking for soup be prepared to get it by the; cup, bowl, French bread bowl, pint or quart. Yes, sea food comes in different sizes as well. There are also various candy and ice cream places that have almost anything that you could imagine. People watching is always a favorite however going on...

Two infants killed in highway mayhem
Two infants were killed during a multi-car collision with a gas tanker in Phoenix, Arizona. Ironically, the accident was caused by a car that slowed down to look at a separate collision on Arizona’s Interstate 10. The infants were a 13-month-old girl and a 3-week-old boy. The vehicle responsible fled the scene. This was a case of rubbernecking gone bad. One of the many rules of the road states that it is dangerous to “rubberneck” at the scene of an accident. While the definition of rubbernecking is to “go about and look at places of interest,” it has become a...
