Have you ever wished you could engage in collegial discussions about teaching without it being part of RTP?  Have you ever felt isolated in your own department, and less "at home" in the larger university community?  Have you ever wondered how other faculties handle specific classroom situations, such as facilitating more active student participation, communicating with students regarding cheating, plagiarism, or poor performance, creating a safe space for sharing in the classroom, fostering more student interest in a subject, or soliciting student feedback to improve teaching before the class is over?  These are some of the many issues that have stimulated collaborative discussions in the Peer Partners in teaching program.

Peer Partners in Teaching is an enjoyable, non-threatening way to broaden your skills as a teacher while increasing your sense of connection to the larger SJSU campus community! You will participate by 1) attending monthly discussions, and 2) having the opportunity to observe and be observed teaching by peers in the program with you.  Peer Partners is for all faculty: part time and full time, tenure track or tenured, lecturers and permanent faculty, including those who have participated in Peer Partners in Teaching in previous years.

Note: you can attend Tuesday or Wednesdays series

Emotional eating is a way for us to TRY to cope with challenging feelings and situations. Especially in this culture, we have been taught to reach out for food when we need comfort, support, and/or relaxation. However, this coping mechanism is often ineffective, undermines our self-concept, and brings us undesired results (e.g., regrets, unhealthy eating, diets, feeling more anxious). Come to this workshop to learn practical skills to stop emotional eating by understanding your emotions and feelings and identifying ways to effectively cope with those feelings. Space is limited (20 students).

This workshop provides practical and resourceful instructional design theories and practice to enable faculty and developers to rethink a course design. Workshop participants will appreciate the benefits of a student-centered course design that aligns performance competency with the learning objectives.

Through discussions and group work participants will learn to understand student needs, analyze a course outline, identify performance competency, formulate learning goals and objectives for reaching the outcomes, and design strategic activities to facilitate the learning process. Backward Design model, Bloom’s taxonomy, and the Six Facets of Understanding will be used as the major references in this workshop.

Participants are highly encouraged to bring with them a course design plan or materials from a current course, such as a syllabus, course materials, etc. This workshop is part of a Course Design program (CD) at the Center for Faculty Development that promotes applying pedagogy and instructional technology to enhance student-centered learning experience.

Designing student learning objectives or student learning outcomes, learning activities, and assessments is not a new process to many instructors. However, many of us tend to approach these design tasks separately or in a random sequence. As a result, there are misalignments between the learning expectations and assessments. In this workshop, participants will be exposed to tools such as, the OSMA (outcome, strategy, media, assessment) alignment matrix, the ABCD (audience, behavior, conditions, and degree) rule for student learning outcome construction tool, etc. to appreciate the variety of means and methodologies in creating an aligned, relevant, and measurable learning process. Those who attend this workshop may also find the Course Design workshop, Go Forward with Backward Design, compelling as well.
