Cupertino was named after Arroyo San Jose de Cupertino (now Stevens Creek). The creek had been named after Saint Joseph of Cupertino. The name became widely used when John T. Doyle, a San Francisco lawyer and historian, named his winery "Cupertino." In the 1800's it had been a small rural village at the crossroads of Stevens Creek Road and what is now known as: Highway 9, Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road and De Anza Boulevard. At one time prune, plum, apricot and cherry orchards covered most of the land. The first housing tract was developed in the mid 1900's. After WWII there was a population and suburban housing boom. In 1955 the town was incorporated. VALLCO Business and Industrial Park was developed in the 1960's. De Anza College opened in 1967. In 2009 Cupertino became the first city in Northern California to have an Asian American-majority city council. Over 60 high-tech companies have offices here, including: Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Sun Microsystems.
