From the early hunter-gatherers, to agriculture, the Gold Rush, and into industrialization, Fremont has a rich historical heritage, with the Ohlone people being the earliest ancestors. Fremont's recorded history began in 1797, when Mission San Jose was founded. From 1836-1848, Mexico gave huge land grants called ranchos to soldiers and prominent citizens, known as The Rancho Era. The first American settlers arrived in 1846. With the Gold Rush, Fremont began to grow rapidly, starting in 1848. In 1868 the Hayward 6.8 magnitude earthquake collapsed buildings throughout the city, destroying Mission San Jose. Fremont was founded in 1956, named for John Charles Fremont, who was known as "the Great Pathfinder," an American Military officer. In the 1950's and 1960's there was much industrialization, including the GM plant. Tesla will be rolling out its electric vehicles in 2012. Fremont was originally a merger of five smaller communities-Centerville, Niles, Irvington, Mission San Jose and Warm Springs.
