The first inhabitants of Gilroy were the Ohlone Indians. Trailblazers, led by Father Junipero Serra arrived in the area in the 1770's. In 1797 Mission San Juan Bautista was established. Ygnacio Ortega was granted the 13,066 acre Spanish land grant Rancho San Ysidro, in 1809. John Gilroy (a Scotsman) arrived in Monterey from on board the "Isaac Todd." He found his way to San Ysidro, and became the 1st non-Spanish settler in this area, around 1817. The first wagon train came in 1843, with the Martin Family, the first Americans to settle in the area known as Pleasant Valley. In 1863 Henry Miller, "the cattle king" began buying land in the Gilroy area. He eventually owned 1.5 million acres in California, Oregon and Nevada. On March 12, 1870 Gilroy was incorporated. (John Gilroy had died in 1869.) In the 1870's Gilroy was known as "The Tobacco Capitol of the United States," in the 1880's "The Dairy Land and Cheese Capitol of California" and in the 1920's-1930's "The Prune Capitol of California."
