Prior to the arrival of Spanish expeditions, peaceful tribes of Native Americans had inhabited Santa Clara Valley for over 6,000 years. The city was named after Hiram Morgan Hill, a San Franciscan who built a country estate, the Villa Mira Monte, in 1886. When the first Southern Pacific station was built in 1898, visitors would ask for the train stop at "Morgan Hill's Ranch," and it was eventually adopted as the town's name. Morgan Hill was founded on November 10, 1906. By the 1920's the city was known for its agricultural products including prunes, apricots, pears, peaches, apples, walnuts and almonds. Vineyards, orchards and greenhouses, with 3 wineries and 1 micro brewery, grace the community. Golf, water recreation, hiking and camping is enjoyed by its fortunate residents. An economic transformation into a suburban residential area happened during the 1950's, and thus Morgan Hill evolved into the bedroom community for the high tech industry that it is today!
