Oakland was inhabited by the Ohlone people for thousands of years, before the Spanish conquered them in the 18th to 19th centuries. Much of the land was then under the Rancho San Antonio land grant. In the 1840's and the 1850's American squatters laid legal claim to the land held by the Peralta family. In 1852 the town of Oakland was incorporated. Its hillside oak and redwood timber resources were logged to build San Francisco. In the 1860's came the Transcontinental Railroad. Jack London, (who lived from 1876-1916), an American author, journalist and social activist, grew up in Oakland. After traveling as a hobo and sailor he returned to Oakland High School. He is best remembered as the author of "The Call of the Wild,"and his log cabin remains a tourist attraction, with Jack London Square named after him, on the waterfront. Oakland continued to grow in the twentieth century, with its port, shipyards and a thriving automobile industry.
