In 1925 Ole Hanson purchased and designed a 2,000 acre community, naming the city after San Clemente Island, named by the explorer Vizcaino, in 1602. Hanson envisioned this community as a "Spanish Village by the Sea," adding a clause that all buildings needed to adhere to the Spanish style of architecture, with red-tiled roofs, etc. Incorporated in 1928, in 1969 President Richard Nixon purchased a Spanish mansion. This mansion became the "Western White House." Following his resignation, Nixon retired to San Clemente to write his memoirs. There are many activities held such as the Village Art Fair, Cinco De Mayo festivities, Saint Patrick's Day celebrations and the Dixieland Jazz By the Sea Festival.
