In 1850 Martin Murphy, Jr. bought a piece of the Rancho for $12,500.00, portions of this land grant developing into Sunnyvale. Fruit agriculture and canning soon became a major industry. In 1897 Walter Everett Crossman bought 200 acres, advertising the area as "Beautiful Murphy." In 1901 the residents could not use the name Murphy for their Post Office, instead using the name Sunnyvale as their town. In 1912 Sunnyvale was incorporated. Notable people from Sunnyvale include: Terry Hatcher, Steve Wozniak and Brian Boitano.
